McAdenville Christmas Town USA: the 2026 visitor guide

Details checked against official sources on October 14, 2026. Confirm dates with the organizer before you go.

McAdenville is a former textile mill village on the South Fork of the Catawba River in Gaston County, a few miles from Belmont and just off I-85 west of Charlotte. Every December since 1956 the town has covered its trees, homes and downtown in red, white and green lights, and a 1980 CBS Sunday Morning segment with Charles Kuralt made it nationally known.

We install Christmas lights for a living across Lake Norman, Charlotte and Lake Wylie, and McAdenville is still the display we send people to first. Here is what you need to know for the 2026 season.

    McAdenville Christmas Town USA

The tiny Gaston County mill town has strung red, white and green lights through its trees, homes and downtown every December since 1956. You can drive the route or park and walk the sidewalks, and the official tree lighting and the Yule Log Parade (a tradition dating from 1949) anchor the season.

    When
Lights on December 1–26, 2026, 5:30–10 PM nightly. Tree lighting December 1 at 5:30 PM; Yule Log Parade December 10.
    Cost
The town lists no admission charge.

Tip: Arrive around 5 PM or come on a weeknight. Past seasons have brought nightly backups on I-85 and US-74 and closed some side streets, and the homes are private property, so stay on the sidewalks.

    Dates & details

Drive through or walk?

Both work. Driving the route keeps the kids warm, but on December weekends traffic can crawl for an hour or more. Walking is the better experience: park early, follow the sidewalks along Main Street and the residential loop, and you will see far more detail than you will from a car.

In past seasons NCDOT has recommended approaching from Charlotte on US-74 (Wilkinson Boulevard) and closed the I-85 northbound ramp to exit 23 in the evenings, and the town has closed several side streets. Check the town’s trip planner before you go, because the traffic plan can change year to year.

When to go

Weeknights in the first two weeks of December are the quietest. The opening night (December 1, with the tree lighting) and the Yule Log Parade night (December 10) are the busiest, so go then for the events, not for an easy drive.

If you are coming from Lake Wylie, Belmont or west Charlotte, it is a short trip. From Lake Norman, pair it with a weeknight dinner and allow extra time on I-85.

Why McAdenville looks so good

The display works because it is consistent: the same warm, saturated colors on every tree and the same treatment repeated street after street. It is the same principle we use on a single house. Pick one palette, outline the architecture cleanly, wrap the trees properly, and the whole thing reads as one design instead of a jumble of strands.
