Christmas light installation in Myers Park
A 1911 John Nolen-planned historic district under a canopy of century-old willow oaks.
About Myers Park
Myers Park was developed from 1911 by George Stephens on the cotton farm of his father-in-law, John Springs Myers. Planner John Nolen drew the master plan, including the Queens Road boulevard and its planted medians, and landscape architect Earle Sumner Draper chose the plantings and supervised the work.
The neighborhood was listed on the National Register as the Myers Park Historic District in 1987. Its nomination describes "willow oaks a hundred feet high" forming cathedrals of arched limbs, and on the curve of Queens Road West the rows of oaks were planted in the 1920s, before most of the houses were built. Queens College opened on Selwyn Avenue in 1914, and the Duke Mansion still stands on Hermitage Road.
Myers Park also gave Charlotte one of its best-loved light traditions. On Hillside Avenue, at the edge of the neighborhood, families have hung handmade chicken-wire light balls high in the oaks, an idea borrowed from Greensboro, and the street later paired the display with a holiday food drive for Loaves & Fishes.
How we light Myers Park homes
In Myers Park the trees are the display. We wrap trunks and lower limbs of mature oaks with warm white LED, and on deep lots we light the canopy so the house sits inside a glow rather than competing with it.
Rooflines on the neighborhood’s revival-style homes have strong symmetry, steep gables and dormers. A clean, single-color outline that follows the architecture looks intentional here; busy multicolor runs do not. We fasten with clips sized to the gutters and trim and leave no trace on historic materials.
Design ideas that suit Myers Park
- Warm white C9 roofline outlines that trace gables and dormers
- Trunk-and-limb wraps on mature willow oaks
- Lit wreaths on every front window for symmetrical facades
- Garland and lights around the front entry and portico columns
